Mozart Cup 2011

I've developed a habit of discovering a live feed of a synchro event just as the event ends. I attempted to watch the senior freeskate of the inaugural Mozart Cup in Salzburg, Austria Sunday. I went through PayPal and then saw skaters take a bow and no more skating.... nothing is showing up on YouTube yet. Bummer because this competition boasted Nexxice, Marigold Ice Unity and the Haydenettes!

Here are the results of the senior competition. Marigold Ice Unity edged the Haydenettes for the top of the podium, reminiscent of the slim point divide between last year's teams at the 2010 world championships which was the last time these teams competed against each other. The Starlights also made their international season debut with a 5th place finish. Since I first witnessed the Starlights two years ago, they have been one of my favorite teams; I think they create unique programs within the IJS. (The Starlights were supposed to compete this weekend at Prague Cup, but that competition was canceled and competitors had to scramble for new assignments and travel arrangements.)

On the junior end, Nexxice of Canada skated away with a victory. The Lexettes rose up in the freeskate to take the bronze and the University of Miami junior varsity team finished 6th. World order was maintained however as a Finnish team took the silver and another was fifth.

Porter Synchro Classic

Calling all Synchro Skating fans, the Porter Synchronized Skating Classic is taking place this weekend in Ann Arbor, MI. You can actually watch the event live here for $15 as well as see on-demand content post-event: http://www.ledinvideo.com/stream.html

You can also get event updates on the Hockettes' team blog: hockettes.wordpress.com.

I've been catching up on the action and I'm looking forward to the senior free skate this afternoon. Team Unique from Sweden is competing! Also, it looks like a few of the collegiate teams - Western Michigan and Illinois - are giving seniors a try along with a former masters team, Denver Synchronicity. Major exciting stuff for a synchro fan.

After the short program, the Haydenettes are in the lead, followed by the Crystallettes, Team Unique, Miami Senior Varsity, California Gold, WMU, Denver, Illinois, and finally the Starlights.

Congratulations to my club teams, both the Open Juvenile and Master teams won their events. Go Riverstars!

Synchro Sightings Anyone?

The Bryant Park rink opened last night. The Haydenettes usually perform to help ring in the holiday season and outdoor skating in New York City. Did anyone see them? I've not found YouTube clips yet.

I hope the audience realized they were watching the "next big thing" in the world of sports. I'm confident in the next few years synchronized skating will make the list of what's in and out on the "in" side.

Miami synchro has their exhibitions next Saturday. That includes a mini-practice, and seeing the programs of all Miami teams, the collegiate program, and both the short and free for the junior and senior teams. In past years, I've driven up to Oxford, Ohio to see the unveiling. Next weekend my skating club is hosting a competition and I'll be helping with the awards and pictures so I won't be making the trip. If anyone is in driving distance of the picturesque college town of Oxford, I recommend making the trip. You can stop in to the IKEA that's in the Cincinnati suburbs about 20 minutes from Oxford for some shopping or just to fill up on meatballs before heading to rink. They have a gorgeous two-rink arena for their hockey and synchro teams.

With Miami and the Haydenettes debuting their programs, that means the Dr. Porter Classic in Ann Arbor, Michigan is just around the corner. Then synchro season is on!

Has anyone seen their local synchro team lately? If you haven't you should! You'll be amazed at the speed and the sound of the blades moving in unison.

Anyone buzz about the Chicago Jazz? What's going on in Canada with Nexxice or Gold Ice? Who's going to make a move to the podium in Canada? Any of my occassional blog readers from Finland have any news on the Rockettes or any other of those amazing Finnish teams?

And the winner is... 2010 Synchro Worlds Edition

Never found a live feed, but the archives will be on IceNetwork next week. Can't wait to see the skating, it was apparently an awesome event with enthusiastic cheering sections from Canada and the U.S.!

The Finns demonstrated their dominance of synchro again, taking the gold and silver. The bronze went to the one and only Haydenettes! After a decade of top ten finishes at worlds, they left with a shiny souvenir. They posted an appreciation of their fans on synchroboards.com and joked that they had worried about becoming the Red Sox of figure skating, going so long without a medal at worlds. While they are lovable, they've definitely never been lovable losers with their overall record.

Synchro Viewing Update

IceNetwork has announced they've reached an agreement with Universal Sports to broadcast the 2010 World Synchronized Skating Championships.... on-demand so archives will be available next week.

Still without a stream, but I found a few people to follow on twitter: @whitethenubeige and @coachkortney. Yes, 120 character tweets is all I have plus the reports from my friends. Hey Universal Sports, what is the point of getting rights to broadcast if you're not going to broadcast? On top of that, SkateBuzz and IceNetwork, why not fight for live broadcast rights instead of on-demand fluff? I'm sure there is a great reason with the ISU, but I think the best way to grow a fan base is to get out there on multiple outlets.

Here's the standings from the short program, the Haydenettes are 2nd:

US Synchro Senior Short

The gorgeous spring weather inspired me to start spring cleaning. I watched the synchro championships on Icenetwork.com last weekend, but I didn't get into sharing my thoughts. Rainy weekends are much better for blogging! The webcast showed a lot of empty seats in Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, I hope skating fans weren't staying at home waiting for my expert commentary. An exciting event was missed with teams making strong moves to cap off their seasons and be teams to watch next year. The senior event included a spoiler on the path to the World Championships.

Starlights - The party got started with the newest senior team, the Starlights of the Skokie Valley Skating Club in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. I always made a point to watch their freeskate in competitions where they competed as juniors last year. If Oscars were given for skating, the Starlights would have received a costume award. They skated to Enya's Sail Away in various shades of blue and green. As they made their formations, they created this unique sense of ocean waves coming together.

This season they made their international debut as seniors, at the French Cup placing 9th with 147.20 points. It was a bit controversial for a team that had just moved up from juniors to be named as part of Team USA, especially as the ICE'Kateers made the same move and were not selected.

Their short program here was highlighted by quick and seamless transitions from element to element. I particularly liked their triangle intersection that transitioned into a straight line intersection. It was good choreography using the music and positions. 58.59

Western Michigan University - WMU won the Midwestern Sectionals last year and was 2nd this year to Miami Senior Varsity. They competed at the Spring Cup in Milano, finishing 6th with 120.32 points.

I enjoyed their parallel wheel into a 3-spoke wheel. I also enjoyed their transition into their triangle intersection. 54.78

ICE'Kateers - This team hails from the OC. (Always liked the Disney reference in their name, so appropriate for Anaheim). They are the 2nd Pacific Coast team to compete at Nationals at the senior level. I've always wondered why synchro isn't as big there considering how many great singles skaters have come out of California, especially SoCal: Michelle Kwan, Mirai Nagasu, Rachel Flatt, & Debi Thomas to name a few.
They did not compete internationally, but did win the Pacific Coast Sectionals.

They skated a smooth program in in stunning and cool toned, sea green dresses. The highlight of their short skate for me was their moves-in-th-field sequence. Gorgeous spirals to the crescendo of the music into spread eagles and then into 135 spirals. 56.04

Haydenettes - The Haydenettes are coming into this event primed to avenge their 2nd place finish to Miami Senior Varsity last year. Not only did they win all of their domestic events, they skated to above 200 points in all of their competitions. They skated to 3rd at Cup of Berlin with 202.36 points. They won Eastern Sectionals this year after generally having a bye to Nationals due to international competition conflicts.

I don't think their speed translates well on the webcast, but they skated a strong and precise short. I liked their deep blue dresses with the butterfly design across the chest. A program highlight was the block; just beautiful skating with speed and deep edges going in and out of turns. 85.92 blew the field away!

Crystallettes - The Crystallettes of Dearborn, Michigan have been the bridesmaid of Nationals by finishing 3rd five times in a row. They like the Haydenettes have seemed to skate on the attack ready to stake their claim to greatness. They skated to gold at the Cup of Prague, but their final score was much lower than what most top teams win with at 151.16 points.

In Minneapolis, the skated snazzy and fun short to Sammy Davis. They also showed skating is "green" by recycling their freeskate dresses from last year. I really liked this program, even more than the Haydenettes'. There were two highlights for me: their no hold block showed synchro style in their togetherness plus their knee action was smooth and made them look like they were dancing on air. Their spiral sequence was super sweet as well. 73.86

California Gold - The O.G. of Pacific Coast Synchro and the first Pac-team to earn an international medal, used to be thought of as a possible spoiler to the established favorite eastern and midwestern teams at nationals. This year has seemed to be a bit of rebuilding season with a new members skating on the team. They placed 10th at the French Cup with 141.06 points.

Hey Big Spender! Oooh, there's no amount of money that take away that splat. Too bad, they had good choreography and elements. However, I think they looked a bit stiff and some of the lines didn't link up right away after transitioning. I did like their spirals into their circle. 54.02

Miami Senior Varsity - The defending champions have also had a rebuilding season with a new head coach and several new skaters on the senior team. They won a silver at Neuchatel Trophy in Switzerland with 177.18 points. They won Midwestern Sectionals this year after generally having a bye to Nationals due to international competition conflicts.

I love their music choices from various Romeo and Juliet themes. My favorite element is their transition from a 3 spoke wheel to the parallel wheel. They have a nice ending section as they transition from a block into Ina Bauers. The Ina Bauers have good flow from four lines to two. 73.63 which puts them in 3rd behind the Crystallettes! That was close, I would think it's a bit like apples and oranges for the judges on that one. The Crystallettes had an upbeat program while Miami was more dramatic. I think Cyrstallettes program just showed stronger skating skills throughout, but I agree their skates deserved the similar scores.

Evolution - This team from Detroit, Michigan has had an up and down season. At the Porter Classic, their music stopped twice. The crowd cheered them through after the music went out the second time. They then  finished sixth at Cup of Berlin with 134.35 points. They finished 3rd at Midwestern Sectionals.

The final team skated to West Story. I liked their sky blue dresses and their flow from the parallel wheel into an intersection. 58.13

Senior Synchro Sectionals 2010

The sectional qualifying events took place the last weekend of January in Lowell, Massachusetts and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Five senior teams competed across the nation, three at the Midwestern Championship and one each at the Eastern and Pacific Championships.

Last year a few teams had byes to Nationals and did not have to skate at a sectional event due to either the previous year's placement at Nationals or competing in an international event. This year, only a few teams had byes, but it still seemed to be a small roster of competitors for this fast growing sport. I suspect the economy is limiting skater's budgets which results in teams cutting back on their competitions and travel. Small fields and small audiences! In the Icenetwork archive it looked like about five people where in the stands and the crowd was thin in Cedar Rapids too.
Haydenettes
Haydenettes FB page

Eastern Sectional:
1. Haydenettes
Wow! The free skate to West Side Story was a clinic in synchro. My husband peered over my shoulder while I watched the archive. I told him he was witnessing the UK basketball of US synchro as they've won 18 championships. He shrugged and said if they were really the UK of synchro the audience would be packed. I'll have to think of another sports dynasty that wins consistently, yet quietly. Such a shame there were so few to witness them. Come on people! They medaled at Cup of Berlin this year! How many American synchro teams medaled internationally this year?

Midwestern Sectional:
1. Miami Redhawks
Their free skate just sings. It's come together so well since I saw it at their exhibition in the fall. They skate with the mark of Sara Kawahara now, and look like they are having fun with the music.
2. Western Michigan University
Last year's winners put out a solid skate. It's just hard to beat a varisty squad when you're a club.
3. Evolution
I always root for them; their coach always recognizes the Louisville coaches at events and says, "LOUIE-ville, LOUIE-ville!" in his French accent. They also had their practices after the Masters RiverStars at Nationals last year and always cheered our run throughs. They've had a rough season this year with music issues at Porter. (Their music either skipped or stopped, even on the back up CD.) They have popular music with Slumdog Millionaire but the Bollywood-vibe was lacking in this outing and there technical errors.

Pacific Sectional:
1. Ice'Kateers
I think this team moved up from Juniors last year and they had a good debut at senior sectionals. I wonder what happened to California Gold? Another team MIA, but glad to see the Ice'Kateers represent synchro on the west side!

Good Luck to all the teams in Minneapolis!

Skater of the Decade: Haydenettes

Consider the Haydenettes of Lexington, Massachusettes. When a synchro team wins Nationals and is selected to represent the country at Worlds, they become USA Team 1. The Haydenettes have done that eight times this decade. Eight top five finishes at the Synchro World Championships to match.  The Haydenettes are US Synchronized Skating.

They're the team that gets on the Today Show to squeeze their programs onto the Rink at Rockefeller Center for the nation to see synchro. They're the team showcased on ESPN when it takes a stab at sports that don't involve a ball.

They attract the top coaches - Saga Krantz could have stayed with championship teams in Finland. Instead she choose to grow the sport in the US by continuing the tradition of excellence on the team.

While they didn't end the decade as US Champions in 2009, they've started this season strong with solid programs and massive scores at the Porter Classic. Expect the Haydenettes to continue to dominate in the US and start to attack the podium on the international stage in the new decade. Synchro will eventually be in the Olympics and you'll see the Haydenettes take the mantel of USA Team 1 on Olympic ice!

Smells Like Synchro Season....

I've been noticing more postings across the "Internets" related to synchronized skating. Yeah!

Here are some of my favorite discoveries:

DC edge performed with Scott Hamilton and Dorothy Hamill in Kaleidoscope On Ice. They performed in the same costumes they skated to Van Halen and medaled at Nationals. Kaleidoscope On Ice will be broadcast on Thanksgiving on Fox at like 4 or 5. I wonder if the world will get a glimpse of synchro-fun before dropping into a Turkey-induced doze.

Another fun find, the Haydenettes new programs debuting at Bryant Park! (For some reason, I can't get the vids embedded, but they should be hyperlinked).

Short Program - Skating to What a Wonderful World

Long Program - Skating to West Side Story

Hearing the first strands of Maria was a bit of a bummer since West Side Story themes are used so often in skating. However, this is an excellent program. I love the no hold footwork block. They threw some difficult intersections into that block too.

I also found some predictions for the adult teams at the Dr. Richard Porter Memorial next month in Ann Arbor, MI. Apparently, the posters think Louisville will be last. There is a history of last places finishes in Louisville synchro, however they don't know Louisville is fielding a coaches team at the Masters level this year. Since no one reads this blog, they'll be in for a surprise! Go Louisville RiverStars!
