I've been catching up on the action and I'm looking forward to the senior free skate this afternoon. Team Unique from Sweden is competing! Also, it looks like a few of the collegiate teams - Western Michigan and Illinois - are giving seniors a try along with a former masters team, Denver Synchronicity. Major exciting stuff for a synchro fan.
After the short program, the Haydenettes are in the lead, followed by the Crystallettes, Team Unique, Miami Senior Varsity, California Gold, WMU, Denver, Illinois, and finally the Starlights.
Congratulations to my club teams, both the Open Juvenile and Master teams won their events. Go Riverstars!

US Synchro Master Championship
I love the masters event because this event consists of people who love skating more than I do. The masters event involves teams between 12-20 skaters who are older than 25. Some of the skaters took up skating as adults and others started at younger ages and have found skating on a master level synchro team as a way to stay involved in the sport.
Skating is so expensive and requires so much time to perfect the moves it is hard to stay competitive or find practice worth it once a skater goes to college. Sure, there are going to be Rachel Flatts and Emily Hughes in the world who go the Olympics and continue to skate somewhat competitively in college. The reality is most skaters reach 17-18 and have not reached a competitive senior level at the same time. This is an age when most skaters put skating in the past and look ahead to new friends and careers while finances shift to school. I think adult synchro skating is really allowing individuals like that to come back to the sport after college and while getting settled into a career and family. It's fun to keep working on skating skills and skate on a team!
I also enjoy meeting the competitors in this event who were always at the rink due to their son's hockey or daughter skating and decided to learn to skate while they are there. Others simply had a lifelong admiration for skating and decided to see what it's all about and got hooked on learning new skills. I think skating on a team makes competitions easier for an older skater. It allows skaters to work on skills together and be inspired by each other.
The masters event had 10 teams this year. Two from Colorado, four from the Midwest, and four from the Northeast.

Smells Like Synchro Season....
I've been noticing more postings across the "Internets" related to synchronized skating. Yeah!
Here are some of my favorite discoveries:
DC edge performed with Scott Hamilton and Dorothy Hamill in Kaleidoscope On Ice. They performed in the same costumes they skated to Van Halen and medaled at Nationals. Kaleidoscope On Ice will be broadcast on Thanksgiving on Fox at like 4 or 5. I wonder if the world will get a glimpse of synchro-fun before dropping into a Turkey-induced doze.
Another fun find, the Haydenettes new programs debuting at Bryant Park! (For some reason, I can't get the vids embedded, but they should be hyperlinked).
Short Program - Skating to What a Wonderful World
Long Program - Skating to West Side Story
Hearing the first strands of Maria was a bit of a bummer since West Side Story themes are used so often in skating. However, this is an excellent program. I love the no hold footwork block. They threw some difficult intersections into that block too.
I also found some predictions for the adult teams at the Dr. Richard Porter Memorial next month in Ann Arbor, MI. Apparently, the posters think Louisville will be last. There is a history of last places finishes in Louisville synchro, however they don't know Louisville is fielding a coaches team at the Masters level this year. Since no one reads this blog, they'll be in for a surprise! Go Louisville RiverStars!
